Back in the day it was possible to throw up a website and target a few major keywords and watch the traffic come to your site. Well, those days are gone forever. No more free ride.

Today I will discuss the true and viable ways to find the right keywords for you to use in optimizing your site. I have some screenshots to better illustrate the process and we will focus on spending your energy in the best places.

In this example we are going to build a website that caters to the Play Station Portable market. We will start by doing a search on one common term "psp".

Just concentrate on the "Searches" column and for now ignore the rest. You can see that the keyword "psp" received 313,661 searches for the last month. Generally, you can multiply that number by 5 to arrive at an approximate number of searches for all the major search engines.

Scanning down through the list you can see that the psp market is very popular...just tons of searches for different components.

If you are just starting out in this market you do not want to optimize your site on the keyword "psp". When there is such a high quantity of searches on a keyword chances are the competition will be broad and very fierce.

This is exactly the case with "psp" as you can see in the "Results" column. This column reflects how many webpages include your keyword "psp". There are 3.4 million occurrences for this keyword alone. Way too much competition to start with.

Start with the small fights first and go up from there!

Take on the battles you can win! Finding a small group of 3 to 6 under utilized keywords, optimize your website around this group and establish some traffic from the search engines. This is a fight you can win!

One quick and easy way to find those potentially ripe keywords is to glance down the column titled "R/S Ratio". Look for keywords that have an R/S Ratio under 1.00. These are the keywords that have more searches per month than Results. From the partial list above we see there are 12 keywords with a R/S Ratio under 1.00. Note: the actual list that members receive has between 100 and 200 keywords to evaluate.

In this example our focus is Search Engine Traffic so we want the keywords research to provide the keywords with the most searches and the least amount of competition (Results).

Now you have a short list of keywords that show some potential. In Part 2 we will take the short list and do some spying on the competition. Remember, we are looking for fights we can win. By knowing your competition you will be able to determine how to gain top search engine ranking with the least amount of effort.
