 Why is Report #4 so important? Answer: This report is the holy grail of watching the competition and the best part is they don't even know it!

Let's back up a bit...Report #4 answers the question "Who are the top advertisers on Google and Yahoo for my keyword?"

1. Check out their offers. Click on the URL and you will be taken to the site. Find out what their offer is. Is yours better?

How can you improve?

Do they offer bonuses?

Understand what these people do and you will be miles ahead.

2. Monitor this report over time to discover what keywords are converting and which are not. If you find that the advertisers are constantly changing, you should question whether this is a converting keyword. In other words the sales generated are being eaten-up by advertising costs. This does not mean you abandon the keyword. Maybe concentrate on articles or blog entries around this keyword.

 

On the other hand if the same advertisers show-up over time...one can assume that this keyword is converting well and the product they offer is profitable. Definitely check out these competitors.

Effective Website Marketing starts with good Keyword Research! Part 2

In lesson #1 we learned how to find keywords that may show potential for us to optimize our "PSP" website. (you can review lesson 1 by clicking Here)

Now we have selected a handful of keywords (3 - 6) that show possibility at least from the standpoint of R/S Ratio.

We will take each of those keywords and enter them into Google Search 1 by 1. Hint: use quotes ("keyword") around your keywords (phrases) to get better results. These are the top ranked competitors for your keyword. We will record a few critical things about the top 4 or 5 websites.

I use a spreadsheet to organize this data. Here is a screenshot of the template file.

Obviously this is not the entire form. We would continue assembling data for the top 4 or 5 sites and continue this process for each of the keywords we collected from Lesson #1.

By simply answering 10 questions for each site we have learned a great deal about our competitors. The top ranked competitor has a Google Page Rank of 5 which is actually average ranking, they do not use H1 or H2 tags (if you looked at the site you would understand why, it is very compact with a ton of links going to specific areas of the site) and the rest of the items appear to be covered fairly well except the <alt> tags.

Looking at competitor #2 it makes sense why they are below the first competitor. They have a Page Rank of 4 (the higher the better for the site owner) which may be because for this keyword (psp download) they failed to include 'download' in the <Keyword> and <Description> Meta Tags.

From this example you can see that there are areas that you can improve on and possibly rank high with these sites. You would include H1 and H2 tags. You would include ALT tags on any photos you include on your site and then you want to at least match the other items in the survey form. Finally, make sure you BOLD your keyword throughout your site. This is Affordable SEO on overdrive!
