Report #4

Why is Report #4 so important? Answer: This report is the holy grail of watching the competition and the best part is they don't even know it!

Let's back up a bit...Report #4 answers the question "Who are the top advertisers on Google and Yahoo for my keyword?"

Here are some ways to use this Covert Info.

1. Check out their offers. Click on the URL and you will be taken to the site. Find out what their offer is. Is yours better?

How can you improve?

Do they offer bonuses?

Understand what these people do and you will be miles ahead.

2. Monitor this report over time to discover what keywords are converting and which are not. If you find that the advertisers are constantly changing, you should question whether this is a converting keyword. In other words the sales generated are being eaten-up by advertising costs. This does not mean you abandon the keyword. Maybe concentrate on articles or blog entries around this keyword.

On the other hand if the same advertisers show-up over time...one can assume that this keyword is converting well and the product they offer is profitable. Definitely check out these competitors.

You can see that Report #4 is very powerful and should be given the utmost attention when evaluating your product/market and your overall business model.

Affordable SEO..."What's in your Description Tag?"

"Affordable SEO is a process. The results are a direct reflectance of how much you are willing to learn and apply."

What's in your Description tag?

Most description tags are wrong. I do dozens of Searches everyday and find that a huge percentage of description tags are just plain terrible and for the most part utterly useless. Having the proper description tag will boost your Search Engine ranking!

The Description Tag is a HTML Meta Tag that the search engines use to first determine what your site is about and second provide information to the search engine user. When you do a search, the 2 lines of text you see below the Website Title is the information in each sites description tag. How you use those 2 lines is critical to effective search engine placement and equally important it is also the first impression any potential visitors will have about your site.

Many of the same rules apply to your description tag as they do for your title tag. They are:

1. Unique for each page. Your description tag should be unique and focused on the main product or service you offer on that page.

2. Keep the Description tag brief. Some say 150 characters maximum. The logic here is the SERP's (Search Engine Results Page) only show 2 lines of text with about 70 to 80 characters per line. Description tags that exceed this allotment are abbreviated and literally chopped up as the search engines sees fit. This often results in a description that makes little or no sense to the human visitor.

3. Always use your main keywords in your Description tag. This is another way to inform the search engines what your page is about. I even go as far as to capitalize my keywords so that when my site shows up in the SERP and my keyword is the searched term, it will be bold and Capitalized.

Note: This assumes that the search engine deems the text in your description tag to be relevant and  therefore useful enough to display to the user. If it is not deemed relevant the search engine will take excerpts from the body of your page. Not always a good thing because often times this excerpt makes no sense to the user.

Now we will look at what your description tag should say. Following the rule of 150 character limit, you need to put some thought into this. Space is limited, make the most of it. Here are some guidelines to use when constructing your Description Tag.

When your website is new or buried deep in the SERP's your description tag is only seen by the search engines. Use this time to really drive home (to the Search Engines) what your page and in fact your website is about. Make short 3 - 5 word statements and if possible include your keywords 2 or 3 times.

As you work your way up the rankings you may need to re-think the wording in your description tag.

When your web page(s) reach the top 30 in the SERP's, first you need to congratulate yourself for effective SEO efforts and then you need to realize that your description tag has transformed from Search Engine food to a wonderful free advertising media. It has a new life and indeed an added purpose. People will actually see what your description tag has to say.

Your description Tag now becomes a living breathing advertisement that if done properly will attract visitors to your site for absolutely no additional cost.

Take advantage of this free advertising space to sing out the benefits you and your product offer. It is beyond the scope of this article to delve into the world of Ad Copy but maybe it will help if you look at it this way. A potential visitor has found your site through a search for your keyword. They are already targeted and have some sort of motivation even if it is just information, they are motivated.

What message are you going to send the targeted and motivated person to further entice or motivate that person to visit your site? What problems can be solved by visiting your site? What is in it for them? Benefits, benefits, benefits. Get the idea?

Just like any other advertising media, your ad (read as Description Tag) should stand out from the others. You have 150 characters to work with, which is more than twice that of PPC advertising with "you know who". Whatever you do, don't lose sight of the fact that you still need to include your keywords throughout the description tags.

In conclusion, I leave you with this. The Description Tags on your website are one of the most important elements to consider in effective Search Engine Optimization. The second but equally important aspect of the description tag is to bring targeted and motivated visitors to your site. Are you making the most of this space to achieve both?
