Report #4

Why is Report #4 so important? Answer: This report is the holy grail of watching the competition and the best part is they don't even know it!

Let's back up a bit...Report #4 answers the question "Who are the top advertisers on Google and Yahoo for my keyword?"

Here are some ways to use this Covert Info.

1. Check out their offers. Click on the URL and you will be taken to the site. Find out what their offer is. Is yours better?

How can you improve?

Do they offer bonuses?

Understand what these people do and you will be miles ahead.

2. Monitor this report over time to discover what keywords are converting and which are not. If you find that the advertisers are constantly changing, you should question whether this is a converting keyword. In other words the sales generated are being eaten-up by advertising costs. This does not mean you abandon the keyword. Maybe concentrate on articles or blog entries around this keyword.

On the other hand if the same advertisers show-up over time...one can assume that this keyword is converting well and the product they offer is profitable. Definitely check out these competitors.

You can see that Report #4 is very powerful and should be given the utmost attention when evaluating your product/market and your overall business model.

Web site Template: Choosing a Template that is Search Engine friendly...

There are literally thousands and thousands of Web Site Templates available today. Some templates are free while others are 'Pay for what you want' and heck there are even membership sites that offer per-loaded theme-based website templates on a monthly fee basis.

If you are looking to bring your business on-line and/or you are striving to build a long-term internet business you must consider your website layout from 2 distinct but related angles.

#1 User friendly. I know this sounds elementary but everyday I see sites that could do a lot to improve the readability, navigation and overall usefulness of their site. How many sites have you landed on where you can't easily tell what the site is about?

#2 Search Engine friendly. A web site template is search engine friendly if it meets the same requirements as those for the human users. ie. readability and navigation.

This article focuses on the readability or the layout of the web page from the search engine perspective.

Search Engines read a page from top left to bottom right. A simple layout would start with the header usually a graphic image, then probably a horizontal navigation bar, then the main body of content and finally the footer. This is exactly the order the search engines will see your web page. Simple yet very effective in achieving your main objective which is to get the search engine to the main content of the page quickly. You want the search engines to devour your main content just like you want humans visitors to.

Keep Your Web Site Template Simple...

"But I want columns on the left and/or right of my main content!" Well ok, just understand that you run the risk of the search engine reading the entire column before it moves to your main content. This is especially true if you use tables for your columns. The search engine will read the entire table before moving to the right (Your main content). Remember the search engines read pages left to right and top to bottom. It stands to reason that the longer it takes for the search engines to get to your main content the less value it places on that content.

This page is a good example of what not to do. You can see the column on the left which contains a fairly significant amount of text. And to top this off there is 2 distinct tables in this column. The first table starts with the text "Description of Services" and the second table starts with the text "Report #4". When I run this page through a search engine simulator it reveals that the search engines will most likely read this entire column and both tables before it gets to the main content on this page.

I am using this page as a test. I am optimizing this page for the keyword 'web site template' obviously because that is what it relates to. I am monitoring this pages SERP primarily interested in when and if it will be indexed considering the fact that the contents of the left column has little to do with the actual intent of this page. If it is not indexed in 45 days, I will overhaul the left column and test for another 45 days. It should be interesting.

If you must use columns next to your content I suggest keeping the content (text) to an absolute minimum. Links would be acceptable (especially anchor text links) just not a bunch of text like testimonials, product spec's and such.

If you would like to see how the search engines see your site go to http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/search-engine-simulator.shtml and select 'Search Engine Simulator'. This free tool may surprise you and shed some light on how you could improve your web site template for the search engines.

Ultimately the selection of your website template should be centered around your customers (search engines don't buy anything, customers do) but with some planning you can please both your customers and the search engines.
